The first few days of the Junior Fellows Summer Intern Program included a number of orientation activities and requirements. Our group of approximately 35 students took an oath of office, learned about the online skillport, timesheets, and transit benefits, took four mandatory online courses regarding codes, policies, and behavior at LC, heard presentations from multiple LC staff members about safety, collections security, copyright and social media, history of the library, and congressional relations. Later on, we got fingerprinted, received ID cards allowing us access to the building and into our respective division offices.
On the first day here, I met my supervisor and mentor, two catalogers working in the Israel-Judaica Section of the Asian and Middle Eastern Division. They introduced me to the small group of people who work alongside them in the same section and division. The first few days were challenging, as I learned to navigate two new cataloging databases. I also learned, for the first time, how to create IBC (initial bibliographic control) records for items. It took me a couple of days (and many repetitions) until I felt comfortable creating IBC records on my own and without consulting directions at each step of the process. My mentor and supervisor patiently spent multiple hours each day sitting with me and guiding me through the steps.
